Being diverse is having a variety of differences among the group that you are focusing on. There are many different types of diversity, but in this post we will focus exclusively on biodiversity and cultural diversity. For your understanding biodiversity is the variety of different organisms and micro-organisms in the natural environment and ecosystems. While cultural diversity is the variety of cultural and ethnic groups and beliefs among the worlds human population. Even though these two types of diversity may focus on very different things, they still have an connection, as many of the things in this world do. There are threats to both the biological and ecological life in this world as well as to the cultural diversity.
The human population is a threat to the diversity of both culture and the ecosystem/environment. We are a selfish group and those who have the power and ability to use whatever they wish to use will use it. This can be seen in our consumption of the environment and our natural resources, which has lead us to global warming and the fear that our planet will not out live us. However there is also the ever present story when you turn on the news, about the threat to cultures around the world because they may have a different belief system than the majority. Wade Davis' presentation on the threats to language is just one example to this.
Because of the threat we pose, the government systems from around the world need to take a page from australia's book and make the effort of have a country that is wholly tolerant of the cultures that surround them. In an effort to protect our cultures and biologic life we need to take the steps to ensure that everyone is on the same page. That every one is willing to step away from their ethnocentrism and toward a tolerant and understanding lifestyle. This all begins with initiatives in education and in public policy.
For those who do not believe that we are threatening anything with our actions, they have decided to overlook the pain and loss it has caused. These individuals, usually part of the majority culture, have a deep sense that everything is for them, and that their culture is in some way superior. This is not a cohesive form of thinking. I do not care to live in a world that might some day turn on me and demand that I be someone else, or destroy my home. Having an active government and a protection for the cultures out there that are deemed unimportant, is important to ensuring that we live in a world willing to accept our strengths and weaknesses.
